Motorola Unveils Three New Slim Phones

July 25, 2006 | by Geoff Duncan

The Motorola KRZR, RIZR, and RAZR maxx aim to extend Motorola's dominance of the slim-design mobile phone market. And, yes, several colors will be available.

After teasing the market for months, Motorola has finally unveiled its new KRZR, RIZR, and RAZR maxx mobile phones. The new phones feature slimmer profiles than the famous Motorola RAZR, and offer EDGE broadband connectivity which is sure to appeal to the U.S. marketplace.

The new MOTORIZR offers a sleek slider design meant to appeal to the fashion- and style-conscious, and includes a 2 megapixel digital camera (with dedicated side key for taking pictures), a built-in music player which supports MP3, AAC, AAC+ and AAC+ Enhanced audio, 20 MB of onboard memory (expandable with MicroSD storage), USB 2.0 and Bluetooth (A2DP stereo for wireless music headsets) connectivity, quad-band GPRS/EDGE mobile functionality, and a 1.9-inch 176 by 220 LCD display. The RIZR should be available in the second half of 2006 in a avariety of colors, although no pricing has been revealed.

Motorola seems to think the MOTOKRZR will be the latest "it" phone, with the clamshell device offering a built-in camera with H.263 and MPEG video capture capability, MicroSD data storage, a built-in music player with AAC, MP3, and AAC+ support and front-face music controls. Motorola plans to offer two models of the KRZR—the K1 and two editions labelled K1m, one for CMDA networks and one for EV-DO. The K1 sports Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a 176 by 220 display, and a 2 megapixel camera; the CMDA K1m drops A2DP, but sports a QVGA display and a bigger battery; the EV-DO K1m has the 176 by 220 display and a 1.3 megapixel camera and a profile slightly thicker than the K1. Motorola says the KRZRs will hit market in the second half of this year, although no pricing information has been released.

Finally, Motorola's followup to the popular RAZR V3x appears to be the RAZR maxx, which comes in at just 0.6 inches thick and sports 50 MB of internal storage, a MicroSD slot, and talks EDGE, HSDPA and UMTS, making this phone a strong candidate for the North American market. Also on board: Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, a 2.2-inch QVGA display, a 2.0 megapixel camera with VGA video capability and 8x digital zoom, USB 2.0, and front-face music keys like the KRZR. Motorola says the RAZR maxx can handle video calling at up to 15 fps; that kind of bandwidth utilization has got to make mobile network operators drool at the thought of signing up millions of these phones. Like Motorola's other announcements today: expect the phone in the second half of 2006, but no pricing information is available.
