Gateway Selling Quad Core Desktop at Retail

Computer manufacturer announces the availability of a high-end desktop at retail as well as a new portable hard drive kit.
Gateway announced today plans to sell a quad-core desktop based on its FX series via major retailers. These retail additions to the Gateway FX series, with a starting price around $2,100, will be joined at retail by a portable media drive kit priced at around $150.
The retail version of the Gateway FX series, according to Gateway, will be available at selected Best Buy, Micro Center and J&R stores as well as online. It will come equipped with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processors, 512MB ATI Radeon X1950 CrossFire™ video cards, Gigabit Ethernet, and 1,000GB or 500GB of hard drive storage. The portable media drive, meanwhile, includes a pre-formatted 2.5-inch 120GB PATA hard drive, a protective sleeve, a USB cable with a double headed end that supports both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 and color coded ends to determine which end should be used for data or for connecting to a power source.
"Expanding our product offerings in retail has been an important element in Gateway's strategy," said John Schindler, director of consumer products for Gateway, in a statement. "By introducing unique and competitively priced products such as the FX Series of quad-core desktops and our Gateway Portable Media Drive, we are strengthening our brand and delivering compelling solutions to our retail customer set."
