Casio's new EX-Z1000 camera will sport a 10.1 megapixel resolution and a big, a bright 2.8-inch LCD display, and a $400 price tag.

Casio has taken the wraps off its new EX-Z1000 digital camera, and while some say the consumer digital camera market is no longer about megapixels and the size of LCD displays, Casio sure doesn't think so: the EX-Z1000 offers a 2.8-inch, 960 by 240-pixel LCD display and a whopping 10.1 megapixel resolution—all at a price which won't make buyers' heads explode.

No, that's not a typo on the dimensions of the camera's LCD display: Casio labels the screen "Wide and Bright" and offers the capability to simultaneously view (and take!) multiple images (like a wide angle and telephoto shot), up to 12 images on a single preview sheet, and enables users to view data and access camera controls without overwriting the image. And it is bright, with an output of 1200 cd/m2, which should make it usable even in bright outdoor conditions. The camera itself measures a svelte 3.62 x 2.3 by 0.88 inches (excluding protuberances).

Of course, the EX-Z1000 also sports technology from Casio's EXLIM camera series, including anti-shake DPS processing, rapid flash or up to three shots per second, a 3x optical zoom, and video capture capability in Motion JPEG or AVi format. The camera uses SD and MultiMediaCard storage as well as 8 MB of built-in flash memory, and USB 2.0 connectivity. Sorry: the EX-Z1000 does not offer Bluetooth or WiFi, but that may be offset by the camera's sticker price: Casio plans to roll it out to the U.S. market in June for $399.
