Remember when Motorola was an also-ran among mobile phone makers? Well, that was before the company sold 50 million RAZR V3 handsets, huh?
Motorola announced today that has shipped its 50 millionth Motorola RAZR V3 handset. The company celebrates today at the U.S. Cellular Store in downtown Chicago by giving away 144 RAZRs in two hours (one every 50 seconds—clever, huh?)
"The RAZR is Motorola's design philosophy made real: technology, design, and exceptional communication in one," said Ron Garriques, Motorola's president of Mobile Devices. "The development was a journey we tookto find and express the soul of our company. This milestone provesMotorola's philosophy of engaging consumers and keeping them wanting more."
Originally launched in Hong Kong in 2004, the award-winning super-slim clamshell phones quickly became the must-have accessory for mobile fashionistas, celebrities, and other motivated to stay on the cutting edge of phone technology, and Motorola has kept them hooked by offering the phones in a variety of colors, spinning them out to major cellular operators, and keeping them highly visible in the media spotlight. Even designers Dolce & Gabbana got in on the act, pimping out a limited edition RAZR V3 in gold and silver. (How appropriate that an industry focussed on emaciated women should flip for an ultra-thin phone?) And the slim form factor of the RAZR has undeniable set a new standard amongst mobile device manufacturers, who now struggle to make their devices even thinner and more functional than the RAZR, hoping to poach some of it's cool factor.
But hats off the the RAZR: it's not often a phone can come along an turn itself into a must-have, world-renowned product in such a short time. There might just be something to it.
