Asus Brings Leather to W6 Notebooks
October 31, 2006 | by Geoff Duncan
Earlier this year, Asus introduced its luxury leather-clad S6 notebooks: now, they're adding leather to the W6 line...and bringing back the hot pink.
Earlier this year, computer maker Asus lunged at the luxury end of the notebook computer market, introducing its leather-clad S6 line of portables. This holiday season, Asus has not only refreshed the S6's, it's introducing leather-bound versions of its W6 notebooks—and rolling out a limited number of S6's in hot pink.
Asus hasn't done a very good job of calling out specifications on the S6 and W6 units. We can tell you the new W6 systems will sport a 13.3-inch widescreen WXGA LCD display, Intel Core Duo processors (T2300/T2400/T2500 in the W6F, T550/T5600/T7200 in the W6Fp-), and will be available in camel and brown leather. The W6 line will likely also offer Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g wireless networking, a selection of USB 2.0 ports, and possibly an ExpressCard slot, S-video output, and TV output…but then again, those might be the specs for the S6. We do know that a limited number of S6 notebooks sport an 11.1-inch WXCGA screen and will be available with hot pink leather: back in February, Asus said they made 1,000 pink-clad notebooks: no word on how many they'll make this time, but it seems reasonable to expect a similar number. Asus is also being stingy with pricing and availability information: expect units to be available in time for the end-of-year holidays. Street prices for S6 systems will probably land around $2,500.
