Nintendo DS Becomes American Obsession
January 29, 2007 | by Ian Bell
With more than 10 million Nintendo DS systems sold in the Americas, the handheld game console is the fastest selling game system in the world.
Swallow this amazing fact if you can: there are close to nine Nintendo DS or DS Lite portable game systems sold every 60 seconds. Sure, this number may seem small when compared to other addictive products like cigarettes, alcohol, video poker, or Paris Hilton, but this is a gaming system we are talking about.
"More than 5 million people joined the ranks as Nintendo DS owners in America last year alone," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "And right now, they're all saying the same thing -- 'give me more!' Fortunately, no matter your taste or experience in gaming, that's exactly what we're supplying in the months to come."
Nintendo has kept manufacturing yields high in order to meet demand for the popular handheld, and on average has been launching 5-7 news games each month to help keep gamers interested. According to Nintendo, they will launch 20 new DS games within the first three months of 2007. Below is a list of those launch titles:

Holy cow that is a lot of DS systems. Are these kids buying them or adults? How much does the DS cost?

I bought my son the Sony PSP. Big mistake, I wish it had as many games as the Nintendo DS.
Theo H. on Jan 30th, 2007 at 7:43 AM:
The PSP does have as many games as the DS (if not more), they're just more expensive and most of them suck.

We bought my daughter (4 years old) one for Christmas this year, pink of course. She mastered "Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses" in about a month. She is a riot to watch on the darn thing, little fingers just flying back and forth. It took her about 3-4 days to get the hang of it. So we are now trying to decide what game to get next, and my wife is now hooked on it and wants her own so they can play against each other!

I can see where he's coming from. Take it from me, a former Gamestop employee who worked this last Christmas season:
Wii and DS Lite were impossible to get. Anywhere.
Why? Because Nintendo brought the right products to the masses and you know what? They are worth owning.
Nintedo brings the quality products. Remember that.

"when compared to other addicting products"?
Nice try, Mr. Bell. I believe the word you are looking for is "addictive".
