Dual-Drive My Book Hard Drives Go to 2 TB

July 25, 2007 | by Geoff Duncan

The 2 TB club gets bigger as Western Digital announces 2 TB capacities on all its dual-drive My Book external hard drive models.

In a short amount of time the number of hard drive vendors offering 2 TB storage solutions to everyday consumers has grown from "barely any" to a respectable collection. That group is now even larger, as Western Digital announces that all its dual-drive My Book external hard drives are now available in 2 TB capacities. The dual-drive models are handily identified by the Roman numeral II after their name, so the models offering 2 TB of storage are the My Book World Edition II, My Book Pro Edition II, and the My Book Premium Edition II.

"The explosive growth in devices that create rich multimedia content—from digital cameras to music players to digital video camcorders—continues to drive consumers' insatiable demand for more storage capacity," said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD's Branded Products and Consumer Electronics businesses. "The popular My Book family of external drives delivers peace of mind in a simple solution that can provide remote access, sharing, protection and storing of precious files."

The dual-drive systems can be set up for RAID 1 data mirroring, which halves the capacities of the units but provides real-time data redundancy. The World Edition II offers network sharing capabilities which can operate without a host computer, so users can access their files remotely via the Internet.

The 2 TB systems range in price from $749 to $799, and are available now from online and traditional retailers.
