Microsoft and Nokia Pact on Mobile Media

August 06, 2007 | by Geoff Duncan

Nokia has inked a deal to include Microsoft's PlayReady technology in S60 and Series 40 mobile devices, letting users tap into Windows Media-based content.

The world's largest software company, Microsoft, and the world's largest mobile handset maker, Nokia, have announced a new partnership which will put Microsoft's PlayReady technology on Nokia's S60 and Series 40 mobile devices

"Through our collaboration with Nokia, we aim to deliver a compelling platform that offers consumers seamless access to virtually any type of digital content they want," said Amir Majidimehr, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Consumer Media Technology, in a statement. "Nokia's breadth of offering in this space, coupled with core digital media technology from Microsoft in the form of PlayReady, will bring new mobile entertainment scenarios to life for millions of consumers around the world."

Microsoft has just released its PlayReady Client Porting Kit for mobile devices, which enables clients to access Windows Media DRM-protected content as well as new services created specifically for PlayReady. PlayReady is backward compatible with Windows Media DRM 10, and supports a wide variety of audio and video formats, including WMA, WMV, AAC, AAC+, and H.264.

Nokia's S60 and Series 40 devices run the Symbian operating system; Microsoft is competing against Symbian with its own Windows Mobile operating system for smartphones, but most industry-watchers agree that getting Windows DRM support into Nokia's Symbian handsets benefits both companies: it lets Nokia customers tap into content protected by Windows DRM, and it increases the ubiquity of Microsoft's DRM solutions.
