eBay Joins Social Networks

October 11, 2007 | by Christopher Nickson

eBay has created its own kind of social network as a part of a major site redesign.

Think of social networks, and eBay probably won’t be the first thing that jumps into your mind. But the giant Internet auction site has begun looking at its own kind of social network, ebay Neighborhoods, contained within the large eBay umbrella.

Earlier this year it acquired Stumbleupon, a kind of neo-social network, but now it seems to have found a real, grass-roots social network fit.

Each Neighborhood is built around a shared interest, whether it be Star Wars or Coffee Lovers (with 353 current members, Coffee Lovers is currently the biggest Neighborhood).

Users are free to suggest and create new Neighborhoods, with over 600 already in existence. Those who join will have My Neighborhoods added to their My eBay page. Users can join as many Neighborhoods as they wish.

The feature was officially introduced yesterday as part of a major rethink of eBay, which has undergone few changes in the last decade. Other plans for the next few months include one-click bidding, which should make it easier for bidders during the last 15 minutes of an auction, a real time auction monitor and a streamlined checkout process.
