Spy Agency Seeks Gaming Geeks

October 22, 2007 | by Christopher Nickson

Britain's GCHQ intelligence monitoring agency is seeking recruits by advertising in Xbox 360 games.

Live in the UK? Are you a good gamer? Fancy a career as a spook? Then the British intelligence surveillance service Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) might want to talk to you.

If you play Xbox 360 games, they might even have found you. They’ve begun advertising in apt games for the 360 like Splinter Cell: Double Agent, which has billboards advertising GCHQ’s web site.

GCHQ’s new recruiting season opened last month, and these kinds of ads to attract computer savvy workers is a new tack. Employing around 5,000 people, GCHQ monitors intelligence through its Sigint program and also keeps government information systems safe, working alongside MI5 and MI6.

As to this new facet to the agency’s recruiting program, Laura Robertson from TMP Worldwide, the ad agency that handles the GCHQ account, told the BBC,

“Hopefully it just raises your attention and the idea is to encourage you to have a look at the website. We're just asking people to have a look at it and go and find out more about the opportunities."
