Gears Of War Wins Golden Joystick

October 29, 2007 | by Christopher Nickson

Gears of War took home the Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards.

It was a week for video game awards in the UK. Last week saw not only the BAFTA awards, but also the Golden Joysticks.

Celebrating it’s 25th year, the Golden Joysticks are voted for by gamers, rather than selected by a panel, and almost 750,000 cast their votes.

Gears of War was the big winner. Not only was it Ultimate Game of the Year, it was also Sonopress Xbox Game of the Year, Editor’s Choice and Nuts All-Nighter. In fact, it was the only multiple winner at the awards.

The Wii was the Innovation of the Year, with Wii Sports the Sun Family Game of the Year. Mobiles and handhelds were important, too, with Final Fantasy the 4Talent Mobile Game of the Year and GTA Vice City Stories walking off with the handheld trophy.

Nintendo was Publisher of the Year, with Codemasters named UK Developer of the Year.

In total 18 awards were given out at the Hilton on Park Lane in London.
