Star Wars MMORPG On The Way?

November 01, 2007 | by Christopher Nickson

A collaboration between Lucas Arts and BioWare has fans salivating with anticipation.

You have to wonder. Some have to wildly hope. But the announcement that Lucas Arts and game developer BioWare are collaborating on an interactive game product has made people suspect that a Star Wars online roleplaying game might be in the works.

There’s even precedence of a sort. The two companies have worked together before, creating the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in 2003.

Unsurprisingly, neither company is saying exactly what they’ll be working on – what’s life without a tease and some anticipation, after all? – but there’s plenty of speculation that it will be associated with Star Wars, and the tantalizing idea of a multiplayer online game has fans salivating, especially as a press release about the venture promises something “to push the boundaries of the gaming market.”

“LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment."

And BioWare said nothing to dampen the flames of gossip.

“BioWare's mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans." said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare Corp., "The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market."

No release date for the final product was announced, but it’s hoped that the force will be with them.

What's the difference between this and the current Star Wars MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies?

I hope this turns out to be true. Pre CU SWG was the best game I ever played even with the bugs. Kotor and its sequel still have considerable replay value.

The idea of a Kotor MMO not bound by the film time line produced by Bioware has the potential to be a serious contender

And what do they plan to do with the licence currently in use by Star Wars Galaxies.

@Jason: The current mmorpg sucks after SOE screwed with the community and people left in droves. It was fun to start with and I miss it but now the game is crappy!

Cheers, we have launched a Wiki site dedicated to BioWare's upcoming MMO which we believe is based on the KotOR Universe. Everyone is welcome to discuss at http://kotor.mmolab.com. Enjoy.

Hopefully, this new mmo won't suck. ;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing a decent SW mmo released. Balanced pvp and Jedi status that you have to earn through hard work are what I'll be looking for.

Star Wars Galaxies will be shut down, a year after this game is released, so I read. Sony Online Entertainment ruined SWG. That's all there is to it. Without them, this game will be great.
