UK Users Want Movie Downloads

The big demand in next generation broadband will be fast movie downloads.

A new UK study has determined that the big demand from next-generation broadband among consumers will be the ability to download DVD quality movies in five minutes.

The study, conducted by Broadbandchoices.co.uk showed that it was an overwhelming feature picked by 61% of respondents.

There was also great interest in downloading HD TV programs (48%), video calling (46%), home CCTV via broadband (42%), with – perhaps surprisingly – only 18% wanting HD gaming services.

Many of these are hardly used currently, meaning that consumers seem to have interesting ideas about the possibilities of next-generation broadband.

"From our results it does appear a little contradictory that respondents rated 'watching TV' or downloading films as being the least amount of time spent on the internet in a week and yet when asked which future service would be of most interest rated them as the most popular. It could be that current services are not at a high enough standard to warrant utilising video services. If speeds were improved, consumers are more likely to use broadband to watch TV and/or download films," Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, told the BBC.

However, a 60% majority of respondents were unsure as to whether they’d be willing to pay for more the increased speeds that would allow them to perform such tasks.
