Greenpeace Takes On Console Makers

New Clash of the Consoles site let gamers urge makers to go green.

Greenpeace, as everyone knows, wants to preserve the planet – this planet. But that hasn’t stopped them going into cyberspace for their quest. They’ve created a new site, Clash of the Consoles, where gamers can compare the e-waste of different consoles in terms of toxic chemicals, energy efficiency and recycling, and persuade the big three – Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft – do to more.

"Game console manufacturers are lagging way behind the makers of mobile phones and PCs who have been reducing the toxic load of the products over the past year," said Zenia Al Hajj, Greenpeace International's toxics campaigner. "Game consoles contain many of the same components as PCs so manufacturers can do a lot more."

In addition to seeing how their favorite console matches up against competitors’ green credentials, visitors can also watch a special video featuring three iconic game characters – Sony’s Kratos, Microsoft’s Master Chief and Nintendo’s Mario.

Of the three big manufacturers, Nintendo has signed up to the European WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive that leaves responsibility for recycling their goods with manufacturers.

"We make sure that all of our products comply with European standards which we understand are the highest in the world," a company spokesman told the BBC.
