Online Sales Go Mega

First 44 days of the holiday season bring in 22 billion in online sales.
A report by Comscore has underlined the growth in online sales. During the period November 1 to December 14, US consumers spent over $22 billion online, a rise of 18% over 2006. However, although the dollar figure is higher, the 2006 sales for the period showed a rise of 26% over the previous year.
On December 10 alone over $881 million was spent, 33% more than the same date last year, making it a record day for online sales.
“Despite the strong surge in spending we observed at the beginning of last week, with both Monday and Tuesday easily surpassing $800 million in sales and showing very strong growth rates, the remainder of the week saw more modest spending,” said comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni. “However, we anticipate that spending at the beginning of this week will again be strong with most free shipping deals available until Tuesday, December 18.”
Households with an income of more than $100,000 have increased their spending by 28%, but those where the income is less than $50,000 have only increased their spending by 10%, which the company attributes to economic factors such as the sub-prime crisis and realities like higher gas prices.
