Sony To Team With Skype For PSP

January 04, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

Sony is expected to announce next week that it's teaming with Skype to make VoIP available for its PSP handheld console.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) show is coming up next week, and according to Sony’s web page for the event, the big news is going to be the fact that its upgrade to the PSP handheld device will include support for VoIP service Skype.

The page says that the service will let users "call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system."

Since its introduction, the PSP hasn’t been quite the world-beater that Sony hoped. But with the introduction of a new, less clunky model and a price reduction to $169, the company is hoping it will enjoy a new life. With other updates such as the ability to connect to the PS3 and stream music, Skype could prove to be the app that finally helps raise the PSP’s profile.
