BBC iPlayer A Big Hit

January 15, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

The BBC announces that over a million people have streamed or downloaded 3.5 millions programs with its iPlayer since Christmas Day.

The BBC was a little late among British broadcasters offering consumers the chance to download or stream its programs after they’d been aired. But, according to newly-released figures, it needn’t have worried – its iPlayer has proved a big success.

Since its official Christmas Day roll out, more than one million people have streamed or downloaded 3.5 million programs, the BBC said. Although the most popular shows were the Dr. Who Christmas special, along with car show Top Gear and the holiday edition of soap Eastenders, over half the programs fell outside the 50 most popular.

According to Ashley Highfield, BBC director of future media and technology, it "demonstrates how on demand services can bring niche programming to a wider audience".

With iPlayer, users can download programs to a PC or stream shows up to seven days after they were aired.

That's all fine and dandy if you live in the UK - but try accessing iPlayer from outside the UK...
