Google Easily Leads Online Video Viewing

January 21, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

Google — or more specifically, YouTube, now has over 30% of the online video market, well ahead of MySpace.

Americans are watching more online video. That might be due to the dearth of new shows on TV, thanks to the Hollywood writers’ strike, but the figures are definitely edging up.

According to a story on TechNewsWorld, a comScore survey found that users were spending an hour a month more watching videos online in November than they had in January ’07.

The big winner was Google, or more accurately, its YouTube site, where 74 million people watch a total of 2.9 billion videos – that’s an average of 39 each, if you don’t want to do the math yourself. In second place, MySpace notched up 43.2 million users watching 389 million videos.

All this means that YouTube now has over 30% of the online video market share, and the figures keep rising – up 2% in November over October. That must bring a huge sigh of relief to Google, which paid a massive amount for the company.

Third and fourth places in the survey went to Yahoo and Viacom Digital.
