It was billed necessary to install Vista SP1, but a new update has been pulled after causing problems.

The saga of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) continues. It’s been released to developers, and should get a full public release in the middle of next month. But there are more problems surrounding it.

Last week, according to ZDNet, Microsoft released a servicing stack update called KB937287, that included updates to Vista installation software, and was billed as "necessary to successfully install and to remove Windows Vista SP1 [Service Pack 1] on all versions of Windows Vista."

Following reports of problems, Microsoft has put a halt on it. Product manager Nick White wrote in a blog,

"We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287. Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes."

There have been several posts of problems with the update to the blog, including one instance where a user had to reformat the hard drive, losing all files and programs. Although only a few people seem to have been affected, it seems to be indicative of the ongoing problems surrounding Vista SP1.
