March 07, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

The Samsung Euro Championship began yesterday at CeBIT in Germany to kick off the World Cyber Games 2008.

Are you one of the best, one of the very best, gamers? If so, and you’re from Europe, you really shouldn’t be reading this. You should be in Hanover, where the Samsung Euro Championships, part of the World Cyber Games, got underway yesterday at the CeBIT exposition. With 250 games and $100,000 in prize money, it’s proof that there’s serious money in gaming.

Contestants can compete on PC games - Warcraft 3: The frozen Throne (real-time strategy), Command & Conquer 3 (real-time strategy), Need for Speed: Pro Street (racing), FIFA 08 (soccer), Counterstrike 1.6 (strategy shooter, 5 against 5), while Xbox 360 fanatics have Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 4.

In all cases contestants will be using standard equipment, Vnunet reports, and can’t bring in their own peripherals. However, they will be allowed to configure the equipment to their own preferences.

They’ll take part in knock out rounds, with the new champion crowned on the final day of CeBIT.
