The World's Lightest Cell Phone: Modu

March 25, 2008 | by Nick Mokey

The upcoming cell phone has nabbed a Guinness World Record with its exceptionally low weight of only 40.1 grams.

As it turns out, the Modu modular cell phone from an Israeli company of the same name will not only stand out for its interchangeable shells when it launches later this year, it will also claim the title of the lightest cell phone ever made. The company announced its new Guinness World Record on Tuesday.

Modu sets the record with a weight of just 1.41 oz, or 40.1 grams. By comparison, an Apple iPhone weighs about 135 grams, and a Motorola RAZR V3 hits 99 grams. The Modu is also exceptionally slim: just 0.3 inches deep.

“From the outset, Modus tiny dimensions and super light weight have been fundamental to delivering the disruptive, modular communication concept that Modu embodies,” said Zack Weisfled, Modu’s VP of marketing, in a statement. “With Modu, the mobile phone can now be added to the list of invisible items that people carry with them wherever they go, such as a bunch of keys, their wallet and their watch.

Modu is expected to launch in Italy, Russia and Israel in October, with a U.S. launch date to follow.

A clarification from modu - modu is expected to launch in Italy, Russia and Israel in October, not April 1. Please note this - thanks!
