Facebook Cyberstalker Cleared

March 28, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

Can you stalk someone on Facebook? In this case, apparently, no.

Michael Hurst and Sophie Sladden enjoyed a 16-month relationship that ground to a halt over an argument about a TV show. So far, so bad.
But once it was all over Hurst sent Sladden a book and attempted to add her as a friend on Facebook, a court in Birmingham, England was told, according to Vnunet.
“It made me deeply uncomfortable and angry. I had previously made him aware that the attention was unwanted," Sladden said. "It was unwanted attention which I don't think any person should go through."

However, Hurst claimed that after Sladden did add him he made no more attempts to contact her and his since left Facebook. He said,

“I didn't contact her I just sent her an electronic message requesting her friendship. Friendship as a dictionary definition has no relevance on Facebook. Some people have thousands of friends on there."

The court decided to dismiss the charge, finding that the Facebook incident hadn’t been proved beyond reasonable doubt, but suggest Hurst refrain from contacting Sladden.
