Spammers Hit GTA Fans

May 01, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

A slew of spam e-mails offering the chance to win a free game and PS3 contain malware.

As Grand Theft Auto IV sells out in stores everywhere, those wanting to get their hands on the game might have been cheered by e-mails offering them the chance to not only win a copy of the game, but also a PS3 console. There was only one catch – the mails were spam, containing malware designed to harvest the user’s financial information.

ClearMyMail, a spam-blocking company, has reported that fully half of the spam it’s seen this week has been GTA related. The ones that didn’t contain malware themselves linked to porn sites that did.

ClearMyMail’s managing director, Dan Field, said:

“Spammers are like con-men - they are the ultimate opportunists and like nothing more than to prey on the susceptible. My advice to anybody who receives these emails is to refrain from opening it, and to wait until they can legitimately purchase the game, even if disappointed by the record sales of this morning.”

Nice... I hate spam. And so many people will probably fall victim to this.
