Acrobat 9 Price Doubles In UK

June 24, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

A leading British computer magazine loved Adobe Acrobat 9, but won't recommend it because the prices is more than twice the amount US users have to pay.

You think things are tough financially? Try living in the UK, where gas has topped the $10 a gallon mark, and home energy prices are predicted to rise 40% this winter. And, for anyone wanting to buy the new Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, the equivalent cost is $1,424, according to Information Week – that’s compared to its $699 price at home.

Needless to say, that’s making British consumers a little unhappy. PC Pro loved the software but refused to recommend it, sating that "we've decided that it can't get a PC Pro Recommended award for one simple reason: in the U.S., it costs $699. In the U.K., it costs £619. With VAT (value added tax), it actually costs £727 -- more than the dollar price."

Adobe responded with a statement claiming that local prices were decided by "our costs of doing business, and customer research."

Great post. Adobe is just about the nastiest company to get hooked on. If you're an independent in the UK creative you need to be aware the Adobe will squeeze and squeeze you. Particularly if you are a Mac user; where else can you go?
