Panasonic DMC-FZ28 Sports 18x Optical Zoom

Panasonic's new DMC-FZ28 digital camera sports a 10.1 megapixel resolution, an 18x zoom, optical image stabilization, and face detection.

Panasonic is announcing new additions to its digital camera lineup today, including the new DMZ-FZ28, slated to be available in silver or black this August. The FZ28s will sport a 27mm wide angle Leica lens with an impressive 18× optical zoom, along with a 10.1 megapixel resolution. And to make sure those shots are always sharp and clear, the camera features optical image stabilization, and face detection—along with intelligent exposure analysis, ISO, and scene selection.

"The FZ28 packs a wide-angle lens and a high-powered zoom, so shooting outdoor events or vacation adventures is easy with this powerful camera," said Panasonic Consumer Electronics' national marketing manager David Briganti, in a statement.

The FZ28 also features a new autofocus tracking function that enables users to lock the camera's focus on a moving object; the camera will then automatically track the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without requiring the user to ride the shutter button. The AF Tracking technology also enables the camera to track up to 15 faces with its face detection feature.

The FZ28 can also capture high-definition video (up to 1,280 by 720 pixels at 30 fps), offers a 13 fps still image burst mode, and can shoot all the way down to ISO 6400. The camera offers a 2.7-inch LCD display, stores data to SD cards, and includes wide selection of scene modes along with digital red-eye correction.

Expect to see the DMX-FZ28s in August for a suggested retail price of $399.99.

The above is not a review per se. Most reviewers miss the boat by merely re-writing mfgr's verbiage about a new camera. A review should be a hands-on report. Why not skip the hyperbolies and show people the nitty-gritty--photos shot by the camera? Of the 25 or more Review sites I have visited, trying to find pix by the Panasonic DMC-fz28, only 3 or so show any. To my chagrin, I had to turn to a UK site to find some and even there they were well hidden. To my surprize, the pix were not as sharp and true as those that I had seen taken by the Fz18. Reviewers would do a great service if they would showcase actual photos that the camera takes. After all, the bottom line that everybody wants to know is how sharp and how true to nature color photos are that the camera takes before they are lulled into spending their money. For example, reviewers tout the Nikon Coolpix P80 (THERE ARE OTHERS IN THE SAME CLASS) as one of the best and many will buy it because of its name. But, if they could see its off coor pictures (to my eyes) they would not buy it. Moreover, if the reviewer saw them, he could save the consumer a lot of disappointment and hard-earned money if he honestly reported what he experienced.
