HP is joining with Yahoo and Intel to create six cloud computing virtual research centers.

The BBC has reported that Yahoo is teaming up with chip maker Intel and HP to create virtual research centers for cloud computing. Initially there will be six of the data research centers where researchers can test new applications.

Cloud computing, seen as one of the big waves of the future, allows for online storage, and promises a wide range of new data and service applications – including new waves to use all that data.

"The web democratized creativity and allowed anyone to create something new and innovative. Cloud computing is the next stage for that," said John Manley, HP’s strategic lab director. "To my mind it is the natural evolution of the internet and if we look back in 15 years time we will be astounded by what cloud computing has allowed to happen."

HP, Intel and Yahoo will each host one center, with the others at the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, the University of Illinois, and the Steinbuch Centre for Computing in Germany. Each of the centers, which will open later this year, will have between 1,000 and 4,000 machines for research, and if needed, they can all be linked.
