One Third Vista PCs Downgrade to XP?
August 18, 2008 | by Geoff Duncan
Data from the exo.performance.network purports to show that 35 percent of PCs that shipped with Vista have been downgraded to Windows XP.
New data collected from the exo.performance.network suggests that over a third of PCs that ship with Microsoft Windows Vista are being downgraded to Windows XP—a percentage that, if generalizable to the wider world of Windows users—paints a far grimmer picture of Vista adoption than a large Redmond-based software company would have the world believe.
The data come from a tool called Windows Sentinel published by Devil Mountain Software, which analyzes data in the community-based exo.performance.network dataset of more than 3,000 PCs worldwide. Devil Mountain Software is run by InfoWorld contributing editor Randall Kennedy. Entering a PC in to the exo.performance.network is voluntary—so there's no way to say whether the PCs in the sample set are in any way representative of the Windows-using world as a whole—but the data decidedly re-enforce the sense that Vista isn't enjoying an enthusiastic embrace.
Analysis of the exo.performance.network data suggests that up to 35 percent of PCs that would have shipped with Windows Vista—based on their manufacturer and system model name—are in fact running Windows XP. Many of these installations are likely supported through a downgrade option that enables users to buy a license to Vista and install XP instead: If they later choose to run Vista, they can "re-upgrade" to Vista at no additional cost. Some PC vendors are selling systems with Windows XP pre-installed using this option, particularly to selected enterprise customers and even gamers who aren't willing to jump in the Vista bandwagon.
"Enthusiasts and even some enterprise shops do their own 'clean' installations as part of any new PC purchase," Kennedy wrote in an Infoworld blog. "And the nature of a Windows-only monitoring service, like Windows Sentinel, means that we cannot factor Linux users or even the Hackintosh crowd into our numbers. However, 35 percent is still a huge percentage, and way out of proportion for even the dramatically unpopular Windows Vista."
Of course, the flip side of the coin is that 65 percent of the users in the self-selecting exo.performance.network data set who buy Vista-equipped PCs are sticking with Vista.

I warning to all people. Old games and old programs will not work on Vista. Please stay on Windows XP forever! I am lucky have no Vista. I just happy with Windows XP like business do. Vista must go to recycle, because Vista don't work all with old games and programs anymore. That sad. Vista = Junk. Good for people to waste money on Vista. A lot of people will laughing at people who buy fault Vista by Bill Gates. Vista is not full stable yet. Too late for now. I suggest people must stay on Windows XP forever and save your money a lot! Easily save your life and not waste anything for your XP. I stick with XP forver with powerful processor(3.16 GHz), memory ram up to 4 GB DDR2, and Nvidia for gaming(both support old and new). Very, very fastest speed on XP to against Vista. I know Vista is bottleneck and very slow one. A lot of people said Vista Sucks! Other lousy operating like Vista, Windows Me, 98, or older cannot beat XP. XP is world's top best operating system than all! XP gone to GOLD! Vista is Bronze. Windows 2000 gone to Silver. We will wait what happen to Windows 7 in end of year 2009 to early 2010. People will keep eye on Microsoft what they discusses about Windows 7. I must make rule against Windows 7 must bring all old programs and old games back for our favorite things. Make our life more easily. I hope Windows 7 must be Windows XP 2. Price should no more than $299 like XP do. Over $299 like Vista price is not allow! Because they hurt people feelings. People are allow ban all/stop buy product of Vista, because people don't care to Vista anymore. Microsoft will decide to drop/remove Vista off shelters from all kinds of stores. XP will be back on shelters at any store for people who love buy XP a lot than Vista. Don't make people complaint! Period!

Vista blows. It is so finicky when it comes to networking. Sometimes when I am using my laptop away from home it gets hung up like a doorstop and I can't even log out. Have to manually shut down, restart in safe, shut down, and restart again. It will work if I am lucky. It doesn;t always work. Not so great for travelers. My husband's old laptop with XP finds the networks and logs on fine. My laptop is new and I was going to have to pay $200 extra dollars if I wannted XP instead of Vista. I now wish I had sprung for XP...
