Apple Allows Online iPhone 3G Purchases
September 26, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson
You still have to pick it up and activate it in person, but now you can set up your 3G iPhone purchase online.
When Apple launched its 3G iPhone, lines were massive and slow as customers had to do their sign up and activation in the store, reportedly at the request of carrier AT&T, to ensure the handset wasn’t unlocked quickly – which had happened with the first generation of the handset, where customers could undertake the activation from home.
Now, according to InformationWeek, Apple has turned the process on its head, They’ve set up a page where customers can sign up for the phone and take care of all details except activation. They still have to go to an Apple, AT&T or Best Buy store to collect and activate the phone, but this should streamline the procedure. It’s part of a move by Apple to shift 10 million iPhones this year.
