Netgear's Green Routers Get Power Switches

September 29, 2008 | by Nick Mokey

Netgear's latest 802.11n routers pick up a handful of environmentally friendly features, including, oddly enough, power switches.

Wireless routers may not traditionally be among the best-known energy hogs of the computing world, but that hasn’t stopped Netgear from attempting to make them even more environmentally friendly with “Netgear Green” features on its latest 802.11n routers. The company announced the new label, along with two near wireless-N routers on Monday.

The WNR2000 and DGN2000 both deliver high-speed wireless connectivity using the latest 802.11n standard, with the latter router also including a built-in DSL modem, eliminating the need for two separate boxes.

“Green” features include packaging materials composed of 80 percent recycled content, Energy-Star-qualified power supplies, and one ultra-simple feature that’s missing from most modern routers – a power switch to flip it off when not in use.

Both Netgear routers are on sale immediately, with the WNR2000 priced at $89 and the DGN2000 priced at $119.
