Toshiba hopes to strike a middle ground with its new Portégé A600, which isn't as small or as sturdy as some ultra-portable notebooks, but comes with a reasonable range of features and an affordable price tag.

The Portégé A600 offers a 12.1-inch 1,280 by 800-pixel LED-backlit display driven by in Intel GMA 4500MHD controller, along with an Intel Core 2 Duo SE9300 processor running at 1.2 GHz. The system supports 3 GB of RAM, and offers ain integrated Webcam, Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11a/g/b Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, gigabit Ethernet, an integrated fingerprint reader, a 160 GB hard drive, an internal DVD±RW burner with LabelFlash, 2 USB ports 2.0 ports and one combo eSATA/USB port with Sleep and Charge. The case is a plastic aluminum silver, but the whole unit weighs just 3.22 pounds—and we mentioned that DVD burner is internal, right?

Prices for the Portégé A600 start at $1,399, and should be available now.
