Plextor ConvertX PVR

November 28, 2004 | by Ian Bell

GotApex.com reviews the new Plextor ConvertX PVR which is a box you add to your computer to record television.

Quote from the review:

"Let's be honest here, ways to capture video onto a PC are a dime a dozen now. Watching TV on your box is old hat, and even PVR is a fairly easy thing to figure out, if you take the time. It's not rocket science, and you don't have to spend a lot of money doing it. All you need is a TV Tuner card, or breakout box, a decent enough system and some software to make it all happen. If you have cable or satellite, that's just a bonus.

The choice really comes down to how you want to do it. You can go with a cheap TV Tuner card at about 60 bucks, and you can spend 200 or so for an All In Wonder type card. The problem with card solutions is that if you need to change video sources a lot, getting behind the box can be a real pain. The middle ground, for users that both want easy access and portability, is the external tuner. While they come in various sizes and prices points, at the hardware level there isn't really much actual difference between them, making it very hard to stand out in the crowd. Plextor gives it a shot though, with the ConvertX PVR."
