PalmOne Handheld Aims at iPod

The new PalmOne LifeDrive Mobile Manager is already on display at Amazon, and is expected to be available next week. It will take on Apple's iPod portable audio player.

"Amazon's says the "LifeDrive" comes with a high-resolution screen, a powerful computer chip, and will be available on May 18 for about $500. That price is higher than most of Apple Computer Inc.'s dominant iPod digital music players, but "LifeDrive" would have more varied features.

Analysts say the device could re-energize the product line of PalmOne, the leading seller of pocket-sized personal digital assistants, or PDAs, a one-hot market now in decline as more and more PDA calendar-and-contact features find their way into traditional mobile phones. "
