LaCie Takes Big Disk Extreme+ to 2 TB

July 19, 2007 | by Geoff Duncan

LaCie has unwrapped its Big Disk Extreme+, sporting a 2 TB capacity, three interfaces (FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB), and bundled Retrospect backup software.

Accessory and peripheral maker LaCie has taken the wraps off its Big Disk Extreme+ external hard drive, pushing the line's capacity to 2 TB.

"LaCie is excited to introduce this high-capacity solution for professional users," said Olivier Mirloup, LaCie Hard Disk Drive Business Unit Manager, in a release. "The Big Disk Extreme+ is a triple threat with high-performance storage, high capacity and a user-friendly quick backup feature for data safety and recovery."

The new unit offers three interfaces—two FireWire 800 ports, one FireWire 400 port, and a USB 2.0 port—along with a LaCie Shortcut Button which can be used to launch any document or application with just a press: we recommend that it launch the bundled EMC Retrospect backup program for either Windows or Mac OS X. The drive offers a transparent RAID 0 array (we presume that means two 7,200 rpm 1 TB drives) along with 32 MB of cache; the drive also sport's LaCie's d2 design with a head-dissipating aluminum housing, a "smart" fan system, and a three-position switch for customized power management.

LaCie says the 2 TB drive is available today for $849, although the Web site says the company is only taking pre-orders, with units to ship in early August. The Big Disk Extreme+ units are also available in 1 and 1.5 TB capacities.

Typo: The Big Disk Extreme+ units are also available in 1 and 1.5 GB capacities.

GB should be TB, obviously.

This is old news. In Japan you can already buy this 2TB disk along with it's slightly larger 4TB cousin.

What is this Japan you speak of?

I've yet to be impressed by LaCie's offerings. They're hardly any different from the OEM enclosures that are available today, and they're a bit expensive for what they offer. I'd also be worried about a portable RAID-0 stripe... the risk of failure is quadrupled that way, because if one of the drives die, you lose everything!

It would be far better to just get two 1.0tb hard drives and two OEM enclosures, then you can use one as a backup drive in case the other one fails.

This sounds like a very dangerous feature if you ask me: "head-dissipating aluminum housing" I'd hope that was supposed to be " heat-dissipating aluminum housing"...
