Voodoo Rolls Out Envy M:152 Gaming Notebook

September 26, 2007 | by Geoff Duncan

HP subsidiary VoodooPC wants to capture the hearts and minds of gamers with its new 15-inch Envy M:152 notebook powerhouse.

Not much has been heard from formerly-boutique PC maker Voodoo PC since its acquisition last year by leading computer maker Hewlett-Packard, but today HP announced a new gaming notebook sure to get some hearts thumping and fingers twitching: the VoodooPC Envy M:152. The M:152 packs a 1,680 by 1,050-pixel 15.4-inch display, and Nvidia GeForce 8600GT 512 MB graphics controller, and a a Core 2 Extreme X7800 processor at speeds up to 2.4 GHz—all in a package weighing less than 7 pounds.

"People look to Voodoo custom machines to deliver the best in power and design, and we stayed true to that tradition when building this mobile powerhouse," said Rahul Sood, chief technology officer of HP's Global Gaming Business Unit, in a statement.

The Santa Rosa-powered Envy M:152 also ships with an integrated 2 megapixel Webcam, a fingerprint reader, support for up to 4 GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking, and Voodoo's famously inventive and outlandish options for case coloring and "tattoo" finishes. Amusingly, the systems appear to ship with Windows XP as a default operating system, with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate available as pre-installed options. Interestingly, no high-def disc options appear to be available.

Prices for the Envy M:152 start at just over $3,300, although with storage upgrades, TV Tuners, bundled games, and (of course) custom paint jobs, the price tag can run quite a lot higher.
