The iPhone Killer Lands at 3GSM

February 16th, 2007 | by Rob Enderle

Boy, is the market for phones different than the market for MP3 players. I was there at the launch of the iPod, and I immediately saw it was a game changer. But it had a massive exposure; there were three other firms in the space — S3, Creative Labs, and Sony — and the iPod only worked on Macs. It took these competitors at least a year to understand what Apple had done and to come out with similar or better offerings. Now, over 5 years later, S3/RIO has exited the market, Creative Labs still doesn’t get it, and Sony seems to be doing its level best to commit suicide by overuse of DRM.

But, with still nearly 5 months before the iPhone hits the market, we have already had several challengers that are better than anything the initial MP3 companies were able to come out with 2 or 3 years after the iPod was released.

A few weeks ago, there was one phone that really stood out as potentially better (for the target audience of those that wanted a phone to do music and movies) than the iPhone, and that is the Neonode.

Making a Better iPhone

Now, to make a better anything you have to be different. A phone that is the same as the iPhone, but from a company other than Apple, would simply be a poor copy. This little puppy isn’t the same. To beat the iPhone, you’d need to be significantly less expensive, significantly smaller, have significantly longer battery life, and still do what the iPhone is primarily supposed to do.

The Neonode hits on almost all points. Costing about $530 unlocked (the iPhone is $500 to $600 with a 2-year commitment), the product is between $200 and $300 less expensive if you value the subsidy at the typical $200. The reason you can do this is because the memory in the device is upgradeable. This gives it headroom up to 32GB (which isn’t available yet in a mini-SD card; at launch, maximum is 8GB). Of course, you can have multiple flash cards, giving it nearly unlimited capacity for movies or music.

The Neonode’s size is substantially smaller than the iPhone, and it is substantially lighter as a result. It is about the size of a credit card (a little smaller, and clearly much thicker). Still, it fits easily in the palm of your hand and you don’t look like a dork when you hold it up to your head.

The Neonnode
The Neonode N2

The included (iTunes-like) music client will auto-record music off internet radio to fill your music library with free, legal content. It has a built-in loudspeaker, so you can listen to music in areas where headphones might be a problem. It will initially come in three colors — gold, silver, and black — and it will run on any GSM service in the U.S. or Europe, not just Cingular.

It is designed for one-handed entry and, when you touch the screen, the phone pulses to emulate the pushing of a keyboard. The screen itself is highly innovative. It isn’t a touch screen; light is projected across the face of the screen to triangulate where your finger is. In addition, the UI, which is based on Windows CE (meaning it integrates naturally with Windows), is custom-designed for the product, giving it an Apple-like look and feel. They have also made it a gesture-based interface, allowing you to do complex things by swiping your finger in a unique way. (Granted, you’ll need to learn this.)

The iPhone does have a bigger screen, Wi-Fi, iTunes, and a faster EDGE radio. In addition, the iPhone has the Apple brand behind it. None of these facts are trivial.

However, the Neonode is an open platform, so, unlike the iPhone, third parties can develop applications for it or modify already existing Windows CE applications to work on it.

The Neonode will show 16 hours worth of videos on a battery charge and has a removable battery. The iPhone, on the other hand, has only 5 hours of talk time, and it would have substantially less than that for video-watching time due to the power the iPhone screen light requires to stay lit.

If there was an iPhone Nano (and there is supposed to be one coming), it would be hard pressed to compete with the Neonode on feature. Even scarier is that the Neonode’s initial product run is limited, which means the price for the phone is initially much higher than it needs to be because it is exclusive. Once volume takes off, the unlocked price for this phone could drop to close to $200 or nearly free with subsidy, and that will be much harder for the iPhone to compete with.

With the free music, the smaller, sexier size, the lower price, and the fact that it will be made available months before the iPhone even hits the market (initially in Europe and eventually in the U.S.), ask yourself, has anyone on the iPod side ever had any competitor this good, let alone before the Apple product initially launched in stores?

I had a chance to play with the Neonode and immediately wanted one. Take a look at the pictures, and let us know whether you would prefer the Neonode over the iPhone.

Wow. I like it! I think the black one pictured is pretty darn sexy. And the fact that it's cheaper and smaller would work for me! I use my iPod for music only, so that attracts me to this phone. Also, its battery is replaceable and lasts a long time. Those two things was something I was worried about with the iPhone.

TheSlush on Feb 16th, 2007 at 10:48 PM:

You can't be serious. This is supposed to be an "iPhone killer"?? No Wi-Fi, no Mac OSX, no multi-touch technology, and a size and shape that appear to be about as sexy as a pack of cigarettes. It is difficult to understand how the Neonode can even be mentioned in the same sentence as the iPhone, let alone be considered a competitor.

Daniel Miller on Feb 16th, 2007 at 10:57 PM:

I would take this over an iPhone in a heart beat.

1) Accepts 3rd party applications
2) Expandable memory
3) costs less
4) supports non-DRM music (you are not tied down to Apple)
5) Its not made by Apple.

And the iPhone is sexy? It's wider than qa pack of cigarettes...

Excellent article. Congratulations :D
I really liked it, and I support 99.9% of your views :)

If you ever tried the Z-force screen before you'll be amazed by its usefulness & simplpeness. I've been an N1/m owner since the start. Looking forward to this new unit. :)

Cheers!

Will.

btw, I dugg it. ;)

Rob, what's the web browser like on this phone? Is it as good as the LG Prada?

martin on Feb 18th, 2007 at 2:08 AM:

You have to decide if this is a competitor for the iPhone, or the iPhone nano !

it's NOT smaller or cheaper than the nano, and probably thicker.
and it's not at all more powerful than the iPhone, the screen is 3 times smaller, no wifi, no good internet browser or email.

@Daniel Miller -> you can put non DRM music on the iPhone or iPod, don't pretend you don't know that.

@enderle, please try to write an honest article for once, this one is absurd

Martin on Feb 18th, 2007 at 3:10 AM:

The biggest pro for the iPhone is how it allows the user to easily handle actual calls or the address book.

So far, we heared what features this Neonode N2 has and see what it looks like. But how does is operate? If it is just a pretty UI theme on an otherwise "typical" phone, then it has way to go.

dan on Feb 18th, 2007 at 8:02 AM:

you have to leave the thing docked to your PC so it can download your music in REAL TIME! ("just like a cassette," they say, "but longer." They suggest that you leave it overnight or take a nap.

Yes, I'm going to do that. Leave my phone sitting for hours. They call it a mobile phone for a reason. In comparison, filling up the iPhone via USB will take minutes.

Dave Hunwick on Feb 18th, 2007 at 9:48 AM:

Once again your delusions are getting the best of you! This neonode looks absolutely terrible(square hockey puck). Interface is absolute GARBAGE compared to the iPhone. I would take a broken iPhone over this crap any day and I guarantee you that the majority of people would agree with me. So once again Enderle you are lame your article is lame and most importantly this Neonode is LAME!

Benji on Feb 18th, 2007 at 10:20 AM:

Dave Hunwick, you sound like a complete moron. An Apple fanboy with no real opinion of your own.

Martin, you are a drunken Apple fanboy too, stop visiting this site...

Patrick on Feb 18th, 2007 at 12:46 PM:

Rob,

Well, you certainly got some people's attention. I have been seeing this phone pop-up here and there on the gadget-site-circuit. Looks neat, and could fill the niche segment of geeks that want to dack with their phones.

But I don't think this will be stealing revenue from the segment Jobs et al are targeting. Many folks just don't want to recompile her/his kernel on a computer, much much much less on the phone.

Some do! I am vividly aware of this, and this phone might take that part of the market. But apps "designed" by developers have a tendency towards looking/acting like vi. And stuff designed by Apple Inc. have a tendency to looking/acting like velvet.

Interesting thoughts, though

Dave H. on Feb 18th, 2007 at 1:40 PM:

Benji, I wont turn this into a flame war with you but STFU! Call me a fanboy all you want, I'm just being real. You yourself know that I am right and you WANT an iphone more than your mothers milk. Let me know how you like your iPhone after you buy it and like it.

Benji on Feb 18th, 2007 at 3:05 PM:

Dave, you have just proven to everyone that you are a tool. Go back to your cave with the other Apple fanboys. You do not belong in the real world.

Andrew on Feb 18th, 2007 at 5:08 PM:

"supports non-DRM music (you are not tied down to Apple)"

So does iTunes, the iPod and the iPhone. They all play standard MP3 or AAC files.

Matt M. on Feb 19th, 2007 at 1:46 PM:

I seriously think the Apple iPhone will bomb. It's too wide, and costs way too much money. Most people will not spend that much on a phone, it's as simple as that.

Dave H. on Feb 20th, 2007 at 6:33 AM:

Benji, just how have I proven that? Besides my cave is nicer than your cave, tis full of Apple products that you want!!! Sounds like your real world is full of role playing games, magic cards, inferior PC products and I bet you don't have a girlfriend. Have fun in your real world.

Benji on Feb 20th, 2007 at 8:43 AM:

Dave,

I am dating your wife...but thanks for trying to prove yourself. Carry on, back to your little iMac, chess is waiting for you hehe.

stephen carey on Feb 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 AM:

Im very curious about this phone, it looks stunning.
I for one, would be very interested in this , simply for the wow/cute/interesting factors.

The Apple Iphone has not yet hit the market adn already people are calling it the best phone ever made ( and Yes , when they bring out a Nano sized one, I will buy it ) however ...( and this is important ) even the Iphone displayed at the Apple Key note address in January, was not fully funtional.
Anyone who's had hands on with the IPhone, have been impresses...but have stated the model they used was not fully functioning.

So I wish the "fanboys" of Iphone, would open their tiny little minds to the fact, that they are basing their judgement on hype and false accolation of a product , they have NEVER EVEN HELD OR USED !!

At least this review was based on actual use of a phone, so give the reviewer a break and use your head

Dave H. on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 1:07 PM:

Benji, (great name by the way sounds like a nice lap dog) that's some tough web talk! Damn you are a hard ass, I better stop, i'm scared of you. Typical nerd mouthing off on the internet.

Benji on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 9:08 PM:

Dave,

It takes two to tango...thanks for wearing the high heels b**ch.

:)

Damien on Mar 6th, 2007 at 2:36 AM:

I don't think this phone will affect iPhone sales whatsoever. i have been a fan (unfortunately never an owner) of the n1m for a long time now and love the idea of the n2, but unless it is sold like a normal phone in phone shops (outside of sweden) it will never become mainstream. they would also need to make sure this model is a lot more reliable than the n1(m) was. as the price actually went UP on the neonode n1m close to the end of it's production i can't ever see the n2 dropping in price "close to $200 or nearly free" if reviews remain good after the phone has been on the market for a while and the price drops a litle i can definitely see myself owning an n2 over an iPhone, but unless they start to make it more readily available i can't see the majority of people making the same choice as me.

rdbeach on Aug 5th, 2007 at 2:14 PM:

The iPhone is by far the best phone that Apple has ever made.

Michael McWatters on Dec 31st, 2007 at 6:51 AM:

The best way to critique Enderle's 'predictions' is to wait several months. Well, it's been almost a year. No one is talking about this supposed iPod/iPhone killer. If you were as passionate in your pursuit of accurate forecasting as you are in your hatred of Apple, you might make some interesting predictions.

Adam on Jul 1st, 2009 at 8:01 AM:

I think every company needs significant competition but, smaller is not good for the aging eyes. Yes, the market is for the young but, there are people of that age group with bad eyes....
